A Grandparents Prayer

Twenty children you say my friend

went to Jesus house that day.

My heart goes out to the parents

along with all who had to stay.

Living each day in fear and pain

looking for what is next.

Trying to tell just one more

about the fighting, drugs, and sex.

Political issues hit the press

Our children are spoiled today.

Parents can’t talk to their kids

they ignore what previous say.

Elders say it’s our young today

who can’t see the fruit for the tree,

Yet we are the ones who gave in to quickly

when they demanded “it wasn’t me”!

Once again our youth of today

hope to change our future bright.

Paving the way for their now children

but they never learned wrong from right.

Grandparents pleading with our young parents

Noni and Papaw won’t be there.

They’ll take our children to strangers

to spend their little lifes in fear.

Our babies torn from their beds

they no longer trust in me or you.

Forcing them to trust in others

living with people they never knew.

This is the world were left in

to hear their cries of pain.

We believed they would know our savior

and they were never taught his name.

He sees our tears and anguish

it was us who failed the test.

If only we’d held his name high

our children would now know best.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

I’M AFRAID NO ONE WILL.

DADDY IS RAISING HELL

MOMA’S TOOK A PILL.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

I CAN’T SLEEP AT NIGHT.

WHEN EVERYTHING GETS QUIET

THAT’S WHEN THEY FUSS & FIGHT.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

IT’S YOUR HOUSE I WANT TO STAY.

THERE’S ALWAYS LOTS OF FOOD,

I LOVE IT WHEN WE PLAY.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

YOU PROMISE NOT TO LIE?

TELL THEM STOP THE FIGHTING,

IT’S NO LONGER GOING TO FLY.

NONI, WILL YOU HELP ME?

MAKE IT ALL JUST STOP.

IF THEY DON’T WANT TO LISTEN,

SIMPLY CALL THE COPS.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

I TOLD THEM ALL YOU SEE.

THEY STARTED BEING SELFISH

AND FORGOT ABOUT YOU AND ME.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN SO LONG?

YOU SAID YOU’D NEVER STOP,

I’M PRAYING NOTHINGS WRONG.

NONI WILL YOU HELP ME?

THEY SAY YOU WENT AWAY.

IS IT BECAUSE OF ME?

OR WHAT I TOLD YOU TO SAY?

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

I DID THE BEST I COULD.

PEOPLE DIDN’T SEEM TO LISTEN,

LIKE I THOUGHT THEY WOULD.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

I’M TRYING WITH ALL MY MIGHT.

I THOUGHT OTHERS WOULD STAND BESIDE US,

DOING WHAT THEY KNEW WAS RIGHT.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

I PRAY IT’S NOT TO LATE.

I PROMISE I DIDN’T KNOW,

IT’S NOT A GRANDPARENT’S STATE.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

IT IS HARD WHAT I MUST SAY.

BECAUSE I’M ONLY A GRANDPARENT,

I CAN’T SEE YOU TODAY.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

I VOW I AM STILL HERE.

BE PATIENT NOW MY BABY,

THIS COULD TAKE SEVERAL YEARS.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

I’LL NEVER GIVE UP ON YOU.

BUT THERE’S A STATUE OF LIMITATIONS,

AND THEY SAY OUR TIME IS THROUGH.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

IT HURTS SO BAD INSIDE.

TO KNOW THE LOVE THEY STOLE,

SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY LIED.

CHILD PLEASE LISTEN TO ME,

THE DAY WILL COME REAL SOON.

WHEN I’LL HOLD YOU IN MY ARMS,

AND KISS YOU TO THE MOON.

SET YOUR BABIES UPON MY KNEE

I’m wounded Lord, can’t you see?

The Devil has got the best of me.

He’s hit me where it hurts the most,

My children Lord, is what it cost.

He pegged me wrong and will not win,

Let’s get it on let the battle begin.

I lay my head down and with every thought,

I pray “Lord, please forget me not.”

I wake each day to start a new,

The first thing I do is talk to you.

He patiently waits lurking in the dark,

For any opportunity to tear my world apart.

I’ve stood my ground and did not sway,

Guarding the devil from getting his way.

It’s now been years the wars went on,

I wonder how I’ve been so strong.

When does darkness come to light?

How much longer is my fight?

Your promised you would see me through,

Just hold on and cling to you.

Set your babies upon my knee,

It’s my battle now, you said to me.

Thank you Lord for all your grace,

Holding me tight by your embrace.
